I am going to start by saying a huge credit to Marcus Sainsbury, for creating something so needed in youth sport.

I recently had the chance to photograph sessions for Core Motion, a new Strength & Conditioning programme launched yesterday for young athletes aged 8–14.

Core Motion provides specialist strength & conditioning, speed, and power training in a dedicated studio gym environment in Bridgend, with a strong focus on fundamental movement skills, safe training habits, and long-term athletic development — not pushing kids too hard, too soon.

Marcus brings over 20 years of experience in health and fitness education, with a background spanning rugby union and league, Ironman triathlons, and personal performance development. His approach is rooted in science, experience, and a genuine commitment to nurturing young athletes.

There is a real emphasis on:

• building coordination, confidence, and physical literacy
• preparing young athletes for sport, not just in sport
• reducing injury risk and burnout
• helping kids understand why they train, not just how

Seeing the sessions firsthand, you can tell this is about more than fitness - it’s about helping young people grow stronger, move better, and develop habits that will stay with them for life.

My son, is a HUGE FAN (photo 1!) and after attending some pre sessions is massively hooked and motivated to train.
